Background: The following is a transcript of the will of Sebastian Hoffheins who was born 14 March 1767 in Berks County, Pa. the eldest son of Johann Adam Hofheintz. (Don Sheaffer, 2003)
In the name of God, I Sebastian Hoffheins of Dover Township, York Co. and State of Pennsylvania am getting old and considering the time is approaching that my creator shall call me from hence therefore do make and publish this my last will and testament and hereby revoking and making void all former wills made by me heretofore make First and principally I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it my body to the Earth from whence it was taken. And as to such Worldly estate where with it had pleased God to entrust me with. I dispose of as follows. My will is that all my just debts together with my funeral expenses shall be paid by my executor hereinafter named as soon after my decease as can conviently be. My will is that all my personal estate shall be separately appraised and after such an appraisement it shall be sold by my Executor at public sale and the money arising from my personal estate shall be divided as follows. I give and bequeath unto my son Henry Hoffheins, one dollar in addition to what I have given him in his lifetime for his full share and the residue of after all expense are paid shall be divided in four equal shares. I give and bequeath one equal share to my son John Hoffheins. I give and bequeath one equal share to my son Jonas Hoffheins and I give and bequeath an equal share to my son Daniel Hoffheins. And finally I nominate and appoint my trusty son John Hoffheins Executor of this my last will and testament. Heretofore made. In testimony whereof the said Sebastian Hoffheins hereunto set my hand and seal the twenty eighth day of June in the year of our lord and savior One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty Nine.
